Compress PDF

Shrink your PDFs while keeping them perfectly readable and printable. We try several ways of compressing, compare them and give you the one that saves most: if none of them helps, we say so and hand back the original rather than giving you something worse.

Drag your PDFs here

one or several, all of them get compressed

Your files are never uploaded

How to do it, step by step

  1. Upload your PDFs

Drag in one or several PDFs. All of them get compressed, one after another.

  2. Pick what matters to you

Automatic covers almost everything. If you need the text to stay selectable, or all that matters is fitting it in an email, say so here.

  3. Press Compress

We try several ways of shrinking it, measure them, and keep whichever saves most without spoiling the document.

  4. Download the result

You see the before and after size before downloading. If it cannot be reduced, we say so and give you back the original.

Frequently asked questions

Is compress pdf free?

Yes. No accounts, no file limits and no watermarks. The site is funded by the ads on the page.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your files are never uploaded to a server: we do not receive them at any point, so no copy is left to delete.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, on Android and iPhone, with no app to install. Just open this page in your phone browser.

Is my original file modified?

Never. We produce a new file and the original stays untouched where it was.

How much can a PDF be reduced?

It depends on why it is heavy. A scanned PDF, where every page is a photo, usually drops by 60% to 90%. A text PDF tends to be well optimised already and the margin there is small: if there is nothing to gain, we would rather tell you than hand you an equally heavy file under a new name.

Does compressing a PDF lose quality?

With the keep-the-text option, no: the document is rewritten more compactly and the content is identical. With maximum reduction there is loss, because the resolution comes down; the result reads and prints fine, but up close you can tell.

Will I still be able to select and search the text?

Yes, unless you choose maximum reduction. In that case each page becomes an image and the text stops being selectable. We warn you in the result whenever that happens, so it is not a surprise when you open it.

Can I compress several PDFs at once?

Yes. Drop them in together and we process them one after another. When it finishes you can download them separately, or grab everything that improved at once in a ZIP.
