How to compress a video so it weighs less

Let us start with the important part: we do not do this. Compressing video reliably needs a desktop program, and we would rather tell you than waste ten minutes of your time on an 800 MB file.

4 minute read

Why a video is so heavy

A video is thirty images per second. One minute shot on a phone at 4K is eighteen hundred high-resolution photos, one after another. That is where the hundreds of megabytes come from.

Three things drive the weight: resolution (4K weighs four times 1080p), frames per second (60 weighs twice 30) and length. Touching any of the three cuts the size; touching the first pays off most.

What works with nothing installed

  • Trim what you do not need. Usually the most effective move, and nobody tries it first. The three seconds at the start finding the framing and the five at the end weigh as much as the rest. Your phone’s Photos app trims with nothing installed.
  • Send it through WhatsApp or Telegram. Both re-compress video on sending. If what you need is for it to arrive rather than look perfect, it is the fastest route there is.
  • Upload it to Drive or WeTransfer and send the link. For email attachments this is the real answer: no mail server is going to take 800 MB however well compressed.
  • Record smaller next time. In the camera settings, dropping from 4K to 1080p cuts it to a quarter, and on a phone screen you will not see the difference.

If you genuinely need to compress it

Real control needs a desktop program. HandBrake is free, open source and available for Windows, Mac and Linux; with its "Fast 1080p30" preset a phone video usually drops by 60% to 80% with no visible difference on playback.

We gain nothing by recommending it. It is simply what works.

Be careful with online video converters

The ones that do offer this work the only way they can: your video is uploaded whole to someone else’s server, processed there, and downloaded back. That means waiting through two long transfers and, above all, handing the file to somebody you do not know. With family or work footage that is worth a second thought.

What we can do with your video

If what you care about is the sound rather than the picture — a talk, an interview, a lecture — extracting the audio solves the weight problem outright: the same content as MP3 takes a tiny fraction of what it took as video.
